Good Bad Examples
The following essay constitutes the introduction to Patrick Henry Reardon’s new book, Bad Examples from the Bible, forthcoming from Ancient Faith Publishing in June. It is reprinted here with permission from the author and the publisher.
The theological unity of two distinct bodies of literature, the Old Testament and the Apostolic Writings—along with the propriety of binding them together in a single volume—is a fundamental tenet of the “faith once handed on to the saints” (Jude 3). Christian persuasion on this point rests on the conviction that Jesus fulfilled—brought to fullness—the promises contained in the Law and the Prophets. That is to say, the relationship between the Old and New Testaments is fundamentally Christological.
For this reason, the authority of the Old Testament is at the very heart of the mandate that Christ gave to the apostles; it is an integral part of the gospel itself and essential to the mission of the Church:
