Two American Religions
I know of no American, including myself, who, despite what the Constitution says, is opposed to the Establishment of religion—as long as it is his own. The United States has just emerged from an election season where its majority tentatively chose between two religious establishments: the religion of the French Revolution, represented by the Democrats, and that of the American Revolution, represented by the Republicans. The first, that of “Reason,” is anti-Christian; the second, that of “Freedom,” is sub-Christian and, while not rejecting the Bible outright, becomes uncomfortable and begins to break apart when pressed too closely by it.

—Alice von Hildebrand
