No Cheers on Election Day
I have belatedly learned to take deeper instructions from the Scriptures, which say both to “honor the emperor” and to “put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation,” alongside our Lord’s redirection of his disciples’ political preoccupations: “it is not for you to know the times or the seasons” (to restore the kingdom to Israel), and “my kingdom is not of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my servants would fight.”
In light of such biblical wisdom, should the winner of the 2024 American presidential election be the Democrat, I will say, “Lord, have mercy!” Should the winner be the Republican candidate, I will say, “Lord, have mercy!” Any high fives or joyful shouts are badly misplaced.

—Alice von Hildebrand
