Why I Purchased These Twenty Books for a Newlywed

I recently gave a friend a wedding gift of twenty books as a cultural contribution to his new home and personal library. I wrote a letter explaining why I chose them. What follows is an edited version of the letter.

These books are a selection from my own library and constitute what I consider to be a core library. Allow me to mention a few, and briefly to explain my rationale.
