The Abolition of Man-and-Woman: On Marriage, Grammar, and Legal Strategy
Michael W. Hannon, Public Discourse
Preserving marriage as a union of man and woman is bound to fail unless we address the true point of contention in the marriage debate, one completely ignored by even the best legal advocates for redefining marriage: the question “what is marriage?”
Legalism or Obedience?
Fred Zaspel, Credo
Find a Christian who is careful to obey God in everything, and we won’t have to look far to find another Christian to call him a legalist. What do we make of this?
Wisely Handling the Bible’s Wise Sayings
R.C. Sproul, Ligonier Ministries
Simply because they are inspired does not mean that the biblical proverbs are like laws, imposing a universal obligation.

So fine: “marriage” denotes a heterosexual coupling (although it’s a circular argument).
Find some way of providing benefits and contractual rights to gay couples under some other alternative name.
However, conservative groups have made their intentions clear by fighting civil unions and legal partnerships that extend any of these marital benefits. They want *no* legal recognition of gay couples under any name whatsoever.
Let’s not pretend this is about the preservation of the meaning of a word (that has never been all that consistent throughout history anyhow).
James says, “So fine: “marriage” denotes a heterosexual coupling (although it’s a circular argument).”
It is indeed a circular argument, and it’s quite untrue to claim that marriage “has always been between one man and one woman.” Someone never told Abraham (or any of the other biblical patriarchs with their multiple wives and consorts.) What those fighting marriage equality need to understand is that their approach is not conservative. Marriage equality is not about encouraging homosexuality as normative. It is about giving homosexuals the opportunity to lead conservative (as in committed to a single partner) lives.
James & Oliver,
I suggest you try giving the scriptures a more thorough study. Regarding your opinion on ‘equality’ you also may want to read Esolen’s article “Toleration and Reciprocity.”
