Appropriately in view of the terrible storm in the northeast United States, today’s chapter reading from the St. James Daily Devotional Guide ends:

“Then the Lord will create over the whole site of Mount Zion and over her assemblies a cloud by day, and smoke and the shining of a flaming fire by night; for over all the glory there will be a canopy and a pavilion. It will be for a shade by day from the heat, and for a refuge and a shelter from the storm and rain.” (Isaiah 4:5-6)

It suggests a parallel to the pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night. This is the promise of God, in whom final safety rests. Our prayers are with our friends and loved ones suffering from the storm.
