Christmas is one of the most important holidays in the Christian year, marking the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Central to the Christmas story is the doctrine of the Virgin Birth. In liberal churches this doctrine has frequently been challenged; among the orthodox it is affirmed, but often without much understanding of its significance. In what follows, I would like to address the doctrine of the Virgin Birth in fourteen theses. What does it mean that Jesus was born of a virgin, and why does it matter?
1. The Virgin Birth means that Jesus Christ had a human mother, but no human father.
