Sound Librarians
by S. M. Hutchens
An impression that developed during my time at the public library was that peace and quiet cost money, while noise is free. One of the reasons people wish to become rich is so they can purchase quiet. In the old, silent libraries the poor could, while they were striving to educate themselves into wealth, enjoy a privilege of the rich. The modern librarian has taken this away, and in the name of freedom thrust their poverty back upon them.

"There are magazines worth reading but few worth saving . . . Touchstone is just such a magazine."
—Alice von Hildebrand

—Anthony Esolen, Touchstone senior editor
